APT designed and permitted this 4.99-megawatt AC battery energy storage system (BESS) facility in eastern Connecticut. The property is developed with a garden center and multiple structures, requiring careful selection of the BESS location and access to avoid conflicts with ongoing commercial nursery operations and to allow for construction, operation and maintenance activities while minimizing environmental impacts. Several alternatives were evaluated for competing considerations, including equipment size and weights, direct wetland impacts, physical constraints and property owner preferences.
The project needed to cross a waterbody for direct access, complicated by the weight restrictions imposed by equipment transport and local fire department requirements. APT evaluated multiple temporary and permanent bridge options, working closely with its client to best balance need, environmental impacts and cost.
APT provided full environmental, site/civil design and structural engineering services, assisting the project team to secure a declaratory ruling by the Connecticut Siting Council that no Certificate of Environmental Compatibility and Public Need was required for the construction, maintenance, and operation of the Facility.
